The Time Tider by Sinéad O’Hart is a completely unique and absolutely gripping middle grade adventure. I had to limit my reading time or I would have devoured it in one sitting and not gotten anything else done! When I wasn’t reading, I found my mind drifting back it, thinking about where the story would take me next. There is no doubt The Time Tider will be one of my top books of 2023.
We meet Mara as she visits the outreach station of a homeless charity. She gathers what she can, avoiding any questions, hoping no one will take much notice of her. When a well-meaning volunteer starts to ask questions, Mara runs.
Her dad, Gabriel, works with watches in their camper van. Travelling from place to place, they never stop anywhere for long. They have no friends, no ties, no home. Dad is always absorbed in his work, plotting routes on maps and always looking over his shoulder. Mara can’t imagine who would possibly follow them. They don’t know anyone and no one seems to care who they are.
Everything changes when Mara follows Dad and watches him meet a stranger in a field. He’s selling something – but what is it? Longing for answers, Mara searches the van and discovers “The Time Tider’s Handbook”. This guide to the most unusual vocation throws up even more questions. When Dad diappears, Mara is forced to find out what’s going on.
“Time and Tide May Wait for None; But They Will Wait For Me.”
As Mara tries to make sense of her father’s life and a past she never knew, she must learn how to trust. Danger and a high-stakes mystery challenge readers to question the meaning of Time and the falacies of human nature. There is much to digest in this powerful story – perfect for Upper Key Stage Two.
