The Funniest Boy in the World by Helen Rutter

February 2023

The Funniest Boy in the World is overflowing with laughs and a whole lot of heart. Ever-charming Billy Plimpton is back! Buoyed by the success of his stand-up comedian act in the school talent show, he’s determined to make it as a comic. He’s learning to embrace his stammer and accept it as a part of who he is.

With the end of Year 7 and summer approaching,  Billy starts looking for opportunities to show audiences what he can do. One thing leads to another and he ends up in situations he never dreamed of. Could this actually be his big break?!

But things don’t run smoothly. Not only is his mum expecting a new baby but his best friend, Skyla, is having a really tough time. This means he must learn to navigate the needs of others while chasing his own dreams.

A cast of caring characters surrounds Billy as he draws on every ounce of bravery he can find. He’s faced with moral dilemmas and incredibly challenging situations. His friends push him to do the right thing and believe in him every step of the way.

Billy’s two teachers are an interesting contrast. “Shouty Man”, Mr Johnson, makes Billy so nervous. His stammer is always worse in this class and he’s afraid to use the tapping strategies that help him to calm down and focus. Mr Osho is one of Billy’s biggest fans. He cheers him on, he confirms when things are going wrong and, most importantly, he listens. Billy is able to be honest about how he’s feeling and discover his next steps through Mr Osho’s guidance. These two characters will challenge teachers to think about which one they are most like when supporting children.

The theme of bullying runs through this story. In the past, Billy was bullied by another child. This time, it’s different. The imbalance of power between a child and an adult are explored in an honest manner. Exploitation, theft and humiliation make the reader feel uncomfortable as Billy tries to navigate a difficult situation. It’s important for children to recognise this feeling as they read. Not only does it build empathy for Billy but it will prepare them for understanding this feeling in their own lives and help them to spot when something isn’t right.

The Funniest Boy in the World shows children that fame might be fun but it isn’t everything. Friendships, family and being true to yourself are much more important.
