The House of Clouds by Lisa Thompson & illustrated by Alice McKinley

The House of Clouds is an honest, touching story of life with elderly grandparents and all the ups and downs it brings. Tabby isn’t thrilled that her grandad has come to live with them. The house is changing, Mum has to help him all the time and his dog, Buster, is smelly and always needs walking. To top it all off, Tabby worries that she is losing her best friend and feels very alone.

When walking Buster, Tabby comes across the most unusual house up on the headland. It seems to be abandoned but when she peers through the window, she sees the strangest items inside. Back at home, Grandad tells her another one his farfetched stories about the house and Tabby doesn’t know what to believe.

This beautiful story emphasises the value of memories and stories from those we love. One day there won’t be time to listen anymore and we must not wait until it’s too late.  Lisa Thompson has created a story of real emotion with a little bit of magic thrown in. She teaches lessons of respect, priorities and trusting your imagination in a gentle, engaging way. Readers will be carried away on the clouds and reminded to spend more time looking up.

Published by Barrington Stoke, this lovely story has a reading age of 8 but an interest level of 8-12. Lisa Thompson has not shied away from challenging, age-appropriate themes and is respectful of her readers’ ability to deal with these issues.
